China's Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan became the first women's duo to win four gold medals in badminton World Championships history after a 21-16, 21-12 victory over Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti of Indonesia on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, who are also three-time world champions, fell short in their attempt to defend their mixed doubles title against South Korean pair Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung, losing 21-17, 10-21, 21-18, their first defeat in their 10 encounters.

Chen and Jia needed only 41 minutes to win their fourth worlds final in six appearances.

"We felt it was incredible, to keep being at a high level for a year and another, we support each other in our daily training and competitions to come together here," said Jia after the match.

"Sometimes one of us may feel a lack of motivation or feel tired, but we always had the other one to push us to go further," Chen added. "It was a magic chemistry."

Chen and Jia won their first worlds title in Glasgow in 2017, and won back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.

In the mixed doubles showdown, the Chinese top seeds bounced back in the second game to pull the match into the decider, but the South Koreans surged to a 7-1 lead to start the third, leaving Zheng and Huang little chance to respond. Zheng and Huang saved three match points from 20-15, only to see Seo's powerful smashing end their chances.

"They were very fast, and their defense was very good, every time I made a smash, their response was very aggressive, not entirely passive defence," Zheng said.

In the women's single, top seed An Se-young beat Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin of Spain to become the first South Korean to win the title at worlds.

Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand came back from one set down to win the men's singles title against Naraoka Kodai of Japan.

Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae from South Korean outclassed Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark to win the men's doubles title.
