Chinese Premier Li Qiang has stressed efforts to cultivate a substantial, well-structured and high-quality skilled workforce.

Li spoke about nurturing skilled talents before the country's second Vocational Skills Competition, which kicked off on Saturday in north China's Tianjin Municipality.

Skilled talents are invaluable assets as the country implements its workforce development strategy, employment-first strategy and innovation-driven development strategy, Li said, adding that all regions and levels of government should speed up the development of technical education, improve the system of lifelong vocational training and increase the income levels of skilled talents.

Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin declared the opening of the competition and researched skilled talent cultivation work.

She stressed intensified efforts to strengthen the cultivation of skilled talents to support the country's high-quality development and build a modern socialist country in all respects.

The Vocational Skills Competition is China's biggest and most high-profile comprehensive national vocational skills competition. The first competition was held in December 2020 in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province.

This year's four-day event has attracted 4,045 contestants and 3,270 judges, participating in 109 competitive events, significantly more than the first competition.
